Monrovia — APM Terminals Liberia, in collaboration with Cleanex Incorporated, has rolled out a drainage clean-up exercise in Logan Town and Belimah. The activity, which began on Friday, June 6 and concludes on Monday, June 9, forms part of the company’s annual Go Green campaign aimed at improving sanitation in communities surrounding the Freeport of Monrovia.
Both Logan Town and Belimah continue to face challenges related to poor drainage and waste accumulation, particularly the build-up of plastic waste that blocks waterways and increases the risk of flooding during the rainy season. Through its partnership with Cleanex Incorporated, APM Terminals Liberia facilitated the clean-up by contracting the waste management firm to recruit and coordinate local residents from the two communities to carry out the exercise. In Logan Town, the targeted drainage covers an estimated 20,500 feet in length and 4 feet in width. In Belimah, the drainage spans approximately 8,500 feet in length and 5 feet in width. The work involves removing debris, unclogging drainage lines, and disposing of waste at approved sites.
This marks yet another year APM Terminals Liberia has carried out the initiative in these communities as part of its continued support to its catchment areas. Community leaders have welcomed the exercise, calling it timely and necessary ahead of the peak rains. They expressed hope that such interventions will continue and be matched by greater awareness and responsibility among residents. In line with previous years, the company will hand over tools and cleaning materials to community leadership at the end of the campaign to support continued maintenance.
Internally, APM Terminals Liberia is also observing Go Green Week from June 2 to June 8. Employees are taking part in activities that focus on improving waste management and enhancing spill response readiness. These efforts are part of routine environmental safety practices, with an emphasis on continuous learning and improved performance.
Staff have been encouraged to participate in both internal and external activities throughout the week. This approach reinforces a shared sense of accountability and promotes a culture where sustainability is built into daily operations rather than treated as a one-off event.

“This project has brought real relief to our community,” said a Logan Town community spokesperson. “Blocked drains have caused us years of flooding and health problems. We are grateful not just for the clean-up but for being involved directly. We now understand the importance of taking care of these systems ourselves.”
This year’s campaign also reflects the theme of World Environment Day 2025, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” which highlights the global urgency to reduce plastic waste and its environmental impact. The clean-up directly targets plastic buildup in community drainages, helping reduce pollution at the source.
Though timed to coincide with the company’s annual Go Green Week and the World Environment Day marked on June 5, the campaign reflects an ongoing commitment to practical, community-based solutions that support environmental sustainability. Through internal action and local engagement, APM Terminals Liberia continues to invest in cleaner, safer, and more resilient communities.
