Activists, right defenders reject Rep. Johnson Williams’ gender committee appointment

Monrovia – Human rights activists and defenders across Liberia have strongly opposed the appointment of Representative Johnson S.N. Williams of River Gee County’s District #3 to the House Committee on Gender. In a collective statement, they expressed concerns over Williams’ alleged track record of anti-gender and human rights biases, which they claim undermines the core objectives of the committee.

While recognizing the prerogative of the Speaker of the House of Representatives to make appointments, the activists mentioned the need for such selections to reflect a genuine commitment to gender equality and human rights. They argue that Representative Williams’ past actions and statements are inconsistent with the values of inclusivity, equity, and respect for all gender identities.

“Representative Williams has demonstrated a consistent pattern of anti-gender and human rights biases throughout his tenure,” the statement read. “His views and actions raise significant concerns regarding his commitment to gender equality, women’s rights, and the protection of human rights in all diversities.”

The House Committee on Gender plays a pivotal role in shaping policies that affect Liberian women, children, and other marginalized groups. Activists insist that committee members must possess a thorough understanding and dedication to promoting equity and addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable populations.

The group called on the Speaker to reconsider the appointment, stating the urgent need for leadership within the Committee on Gender that aligns with its core mandate. “It is essential that the committee is composed of individuals who reflect our shared values and are dedicated to creating a more just and equitable society,” they stated.

In a further appeal, they urged the donor community and development partners not to recognize Representative Williams in his new role. They stressed the importance of ensuring that leadership within the committee is fully committed to advancing gender priorities effectively and with integrity.

“We stand united in our call for a reevaluation of this appointment to uphold the integrity and effectiveness of the House Committee on Gender,” the statement concluded.
