GBARNGA, Bong County — A group of farmers in Dunbar Town, organized last year by a sociology graduate, has its first rice harvest ready from more than 12 hectares. They plan to feed their own community first and eventually sell packaged rice in Gbarnga.

Fatu Clarke, who holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology, mobilized dozens of men and women in Bong County’s Electoral District No. 2 to plant the rice. She said she acted on President Joseph Boakai’s call for citizens to help grow the country’s food rather than leave the job to the government.
“I was moved by the president’s commitment and motivation. I realized that addressing food insecurity requires the collective efforts of every citizen,” Clarke said.
The group has begun preparing for its next planting cycle, she said, and hopes to grow enough in the next harvest to package rice for sale beyond Dunbar Town.
“Our first harvest will be used to feed the community. We intend to produce more rice during the next harvest, which will allow us to package the rice and make it available beyond Dunbar Town,” she said.
Clarke said her academic background had not kept her out of farming. She praised the president for prioritizing agriculture and called on the government and development partners for logistical support to help the group expand production and supply surrounding communities, including Gbarnga, the county’s commercial hub.
