Tubman University Asks Police to Probe 2 a.m. Campus Takeover on Midterm Exam Day

Tubman University says regular operations have resumed after an alleged overnight disruption on campus. The administration has asked police to investigate.

HARPER, Maryland County – William V. S. Tubman University has asked the Liberia National Police to investigate a group, including some of its own staff, that the university says stormed its Harper campus at about 2 a.m. Monday, seized keys to buildings and vehicles, deflated the tires of a student bus and threatened violence against anyone trying to enter, as students prepared to begin midterm examinations.

The university administration said in a statement Tuesday that regular academic and administrative activities have since resumed.

According to the statement, the group entered the campus while boarding students, faculty and staff living on campus were asleep. It hammered on university buildings, including offices and classrooms, took control of keys to some facilities, seized vehicle keys and deflated the tires of university vehicles, including a bus that carries students and staff. Students and staff were blocked from the campus, and people attempting to enter were threatened with physical violence, the administration said.

“No grievance justifies intimidation, interference with university property, or disruption of academic activities,” the statement said.

The administration said it briefed the Board of Trustees, the university’s legal governing authority, immediately after the incident. Board Chairman Floyd A. Thomas expressed deep regret and disappointment and asked for an immediate police investigation, the statement said. The administration then formally requested an investigation through the LNP’s regional commander, Col. Moses Tamba Sepoh II, and called for a thorough, impartial and timely inquiry to identify those responsible.

The statement credited Maryland County Superintendent Nathaniel S. Toe Jr. with helping the university recover keys to its facilities.

The administration did not say what grievance prompted the disruption. It said it respects staff’s right to raise legitimate concerns but that grievances must go through established administrative procedures and lawful channels without jeopardizing students’ education.

The university said it would take all lawful and necessary measures to protect its property and keep academic and administrative operations running, and it urged the campus community and the public to remain calm and allow the police investigation to proceed without interference.

The administration said the disruption threatened gains the university has made with the Board of Trustees, the government and development partners, citing rising student enrollment and the start of graduate education, including a master’s program in Construction Management.

“William V. S. Tubman University belongs to the people of Liberia, and its mission transcends individual interests or disagreements,” the statement said.
