After 30 Years in Darkness, Greenville Moves Closer to Reliable Power Under Light-Up Southeast Project

Published: September 24, 2026

GREENVILLE, Sinoe County — After more than three decades without reliable electricity, Greenville is moving closer to a new era of power access as solar distribution lines are being extended from Murrayville into the city and transformers mounted on poles under the Light-Up Southeast initiative.

The project, being implemented by the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency, or RREA, with funding support from the European Union in partnership with the Government of Liberia, is expected to provide electricity to homes, schools, health facilities and businesses in Greenville.

For residents who have spent decades relying largely on generators, kerosene lamps and other alternative sources of energy, the ongoing installation represents a major step toward addressing one of the city’s longstanding infrastructure challenges.

According to RREA, work on the solar component is progressing, with distribution infrastructure being installed to connect residents and institutions.

The intervention is expected to provide more immediate electricity access while work continues on a longer-term renewable energy solution for the area.

The Greenville Mini Hydropower Project, a 2-megawatt facility being developed on the Sinoe River in Saywoo Town, is also progressing and is expected to become fully operational by 2027.

Once completed, the hydropower facility is expected to complement the solar system and provide a more sustainable source of renewable electricity for Greenville and surrounding communities.

Officials say reliable electricity could significantly affect daily life and economic activities in Sinoe County, particularly by improving conditions for schools, health facilities, businesses and households.

For schools, electricity could support classroom activities and expand access to computers and other digital learning tools. Health facilities could benefit from reliable power for medical equipment and the refrigeration of medicines and vaccines.

Businesses could also extend operating hours, reduce dependence on costly generators and potentially expand their operations, while households would gain access to safer lighting, improved communication and other electricity-dependent services.

RREA has thanked residents for their patience as implementation continues, expressing optimism that expanded electricity access will stimulate economic activity and create new opportunities across Sinoe County.

For Greenville, the arrival of electricity infrastructure represents more than the installation of poles, transformers and power lines. After more than 30 years without reliable electricity, it signals the prospect of a major change in how residents live, work, study and conduct business.
