MONROVIA – Four women’s clubs will compete for a US$6,000 prize at the Bettomax Cup for the first time when the tournament’s second edition opens Aug. 7, part of an expanded format that also raises the men’s champion’s purse to US$12,000.

The tournament runs through Aug. 23 at the Tusa Field Sports Pitch in Gardnersville with eight men’s teams and four women’s clubs. Each participating club receives a US$2,500 preparation grant, 25 percent more than last year. The men’s winner takes US$12,000, up 20 percent from the inaugural edition, with US$6,000 for the runner-up.

The draw placed league champion Watanga FC with Discoveries FC, Paynesville FC and last season’s beaten finalist Bea Mountain FC in Group A. Defending champion Heaven Eleven FC was drawn with Wologizi FC, LPRC Oilers and LISCR FC in Group B.

Heaven Eleven returns as holder after replacing FC Fassell, which withdrew citing preseason commitments. The club finished ninth in the 2025-26 Liberia Football Association First Division season but kept its place as defending champion.

The women’s field is Determine Girls FC, World Girls FC, Senior Female Professionals and Bushrod Queens. The four places were reserved for the top finishers in the 2025-26 LFA Women’s Upper League, but Bushrod Queens came in after league runner-up Shaita Angels withdrew, citing player fatigue.

Bettomax Country Director Darren Glove said the company wants tournament proceeds channeled to grassroots football through the LFA. “We want to be part of the development of football in Liberia. As you are aware, we are a betting company, so we don’t get involved with underage activities and only focus on senior levels. But what we want is for whatever is generated from the tournament to be distributed to the grassroots through the LFA, without necessarily directly involving us, but to be recognized that we are assisting the growth and development of football in Liberia,” Glove said.

LFA First Vice President Sekou Konneh welcomed the women’s competition and said he hoped Bettomax would extend its support to sponsorship of the association’s leagues.

The competition falls under a three-year partnership between Bettomax and the LFA that created the Bettomax Champions Cup, a two-week preseason tournament intended to sharpen local clubs before the league season.
