MONROVIA — An estimated 50,000 people attended a three-day Independence Day festival at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex that ended Sunday, the organizers said, drawing crowds in Paynesville while the state’s official 179th anniversary ceremonies were held in Buchanan.
The attendance figure is the organizers’ own and has not been independently verified. They said the festival, held July 24 to 26 and billed as the All Liberian Independence Festival, or LibFest 2026, was among the largest Independence Day gatherings in recent years and that more than 200 vendors and small businesses took part.
“For three days, Liberia did not just celebrate its independence. It reclaimed the stage for it,” the organizers said in a statement issued after the event.
They said promotional activities and community events were held in several counties in the weeks before July 26 to extend the celebration beyond Monrovia.
The organizers listed Destine Petroleum, Lonestar Cell MTN and Yanjing Beer among their sponsors, and named the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Liberia National Tourism Authority and DKT Liberia as partners. They did not say what any sponsor or government partner contributed.
They said artists, media organizations, influencers and content creators carried coverage of the festival to a combined online following of more than 25 million, a figure that counts followers rather than people who saw the material.
Among those covering the event was Ghanaian travel content creator Wode Maya.
“Through their storytelling, Liberia’s culture, hospitality, and creative and tourism potential reached millions of viewers across the continent and beyond, placing Liberia inside a global conversation it has too rarely been part of,” the statement said.
The organizers also credited security agencies, medical teams, volunteers and emergency responders with keeping the event peaceful.
“Your vigilance and professionalism made it possible for tens of thousands of Liberians to celebrate freely and safely,” they said.
They said the festival will return on a larger scale next year.
