Tubman University officials and partners stand together during a university event in Maryland County

Published: November 10, 2025

Harper, Maryland County — Tubman University (TU) is positioning itself as a rising academic hub in southeastern Liberia, with new programs and global collaborations designed to strengthen its impact on healthcare, engineering, and education.

Under the leadership of President Dr. Olu Q. Menjay, the university has unveiled major initiatives that reflect its evolving role in national development and global engagement. At the heart of these announcements is the launch of a Critical Care Education Program, developed in partnership with Partners In Health (PIH). The initiative is expected to enhance the country’s clinical training capacity and respond to Liberia’s growing need for skilled healthcare professionals. “This partnership is not just about a new course—it’s about saving lives and building a stronger health system,” Dr. Menjay said during a Career Fair organized by TU’s Department of Career Planning and Placement Services.

Global Vision and Academic Growth

Tubman University’s ambitions now extend beyond national borders. The institution is currently negotiating partnerships to establish Master’s programs in Education and Engineering, offering students access to U.S.-affiliated degrees through international collaborations. “Our aim is to ensure that every Tubman student receives an education that meets international standards,” Dr. Menjay said. “We are preparing our graduates not only for Liberia but for the world.”

Recent international engagement has already borne fruit. TU was the only Liberian university invited to participate in an international program in Jiangsu Province, China, joining 25 other African universities. Two TU students are currently studying in China as part of that exchange, an early success story that highlights the university’s expanding network across Asia and Africa.

Strengthening Partnerships and Infrastructure

Support for Tubman University continues to grow, both locally and internationally, as the University of Memphis is expected to deliver a 40-foot container of desks, computers, and learning materials on November 11, 2025, while a former staff member, Dr. Bridges, has donated 25 computers to enhance digital learning resources. In addition, the University of Johannesburg’s Vice-Chancellor, Senior Dean of Engineering, and International Director are set to visit TU in the coming weeks to explore new academic and research collaborations. “These partnerships are not symbolic—they are practical investments in Liberia’s future workforce,” Dr. Menjay emphasized.

Aligning with National Priorities

Dr. Menjay confirmed that TU will implement policies promoting green campus initiatives and environmental education, reflecting the government’s recent efforts to introduce carbon credit systems in national development plans. He also acknowledged President Boakai’s decision to restructure the university’s governing board, a move aimed at improving performance and accountability in higher education.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Beyond institutional growth, the Career Fair provided a platform for students to engage directly with potential employers and mentors from major organizations, including Partners In Health, Ecobank, Cavalla Rubber Corporation, Maryland Palm Oil Plantation, and Liberia International Bank. Addressing students, Dr. Menjay urged them to see education as a lifelong pursuit and a moral responsibility. “Education determines the quality of our survival,” he said. “If we train you wrongly, the nation suffers; if we train you rightly, the nation thrives.”
