Graduates of Ambassador Kemayah’s Women Empowerment & Vocational Skills Training Program pose with certificates in Monrovia

Published: June 23, 2025

MONROVIA – Forty young Liberian women have graduated from the Ambassador Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, Sr. Women Empowerment & Vocational Skills Training Program, completing six months of free instruction in tailoring and cosmetology aimed at promoting economic self-reliance.

The program, operated by the Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE), equips young women with marketable skills to reduce unemployment and expand income-generating opportunities. Saturday’s graduation ceremony marked the first cohort to successfully complete the initiative since its launch.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, Sr.—former Minister of Foreign Affairs and founder of the program—emphasized the long-term value of empowering women through vocational education.

“When you educate a woman, you educate the world,” Kemayah said. “This program was established to change lives by giving women the tools they need to become independent and productive members of society.”

Kemayah encouraged the graduates to apply their newly acquired skills with determination and integrity. He also announced plans to expand the curriculum to include a food processing course in the next training cycle to further diversify career paths available to participants.

The graduation ceremony drew several dignitaries, including officials from the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), community leaders, and government representatives, all of whom applauded the program’s mission and called for sustained support.

Organizers said the program is preparing to launch its second cycle in the coming weeks, with plans to recruit a new class of trainees from across Montserrado County and potentially other regions.

The Ambassador Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, Sr. Women Empowerment & Vocational Skills Training Program is one of several community-based efforts aimed at tackling youth unemployment and promoting gender equality in Liberia’s informal economy.
