Monrovia — An incident involving a Royal Air Maroc flight at the Roberts International Airport (RIA) has prompted a thorough investigation by aviation authorities. The incident according to the Liberia Airport Authority occurred early Saturday morning, August 17, 2024, when Royal Air Maroc flight AT-567, a Boeing 737-800 Series aircraft, landed at the airport around 5:15 AM without any immediate issues.
After safely landing and taxiing to the Jetway, the aircraft underwent a routine inspection before its scheduled departure. It was during this inspection that significant debris was discovered on the aircraft, leading to concerns about potential damage.
Further examination by the airport’s Safety Compliance team revealed that portions of the runway pavement shoulders had been damaged, scattering large debris along the runway. The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) quickly alerted the airline crew, advising that the aircraft remain grounded pending further investigation. The Liberia Civil Aviation Authority (LCAA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) were promptly notified and dispatched inspection teams to the scene.
According to initial findings, the aircraft had safely landed but had veered slightly off the runway. Fortunately, there were no injuries to passengers or crew, and the aircraft sustained no structural damage. Notably, passengers aboard the flight were unaware of the incident as it occurred.
Passengers scheduled to depart on the same aircraft were accommodated in nearby hotels while awaiting an alternative Royal Air Maroc flight expected later in the day. The LCAA and AAIB are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident, and the aircraft remains grounded until further notice.
The Liberia Airport Authority has assured the public of its commitment to upholding the highest safety standards for both passengers and aircraft.
Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
