Liberia U-20 national football team huddles together at George Weah Technical Center following news of WAFU Championship postponement

Last Updated on June 11, 2025 by The Liberian Investigator

Accra – The West African Football Union (WAFU) has announced the indefinite postponement of the maiden edition of the Zone A and Zone B U-20 Men’s Championship, which was originally scheduled to kick off on June 15 in Accra, Ghana.

The Liberia Football Association (LFA) confirmed the decision on Monday, informing players and technical staff in camp at the George Weah Technical Center to return to their respective homes until further notice.

In a communication to member associations, WAFU stated that the tournament is being rescheduled for organizational reasons.

“For organisational reasons, WAFU-B has just proposed that the WAFU U-20 Cup Tournament, which was due to be held from June 15 to 30 in Ghana, be postponed to a later date,” the statement read.

It added, “We are currently discussing certain arrangements with WAFU-B, and will inform the federations of the final decision by tomorrow.”

The tournament, which would have brought together 13 of the 16 West African nations from both WAFU Zone A and B, is now on hold, with a new date yet to be announced.

Participating countries include hosts Ghana, Togo, The Gambia, Liberia, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Niger, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, and Benin.

Liberia head coach Cooper Sannah had named a 20-man squad for the tournament amidst criticism. With the postponement, he may consider making changes once a new date is confirmed.

Liberia was drawn in Group A, alongside hosts Ghana, Togo, and The Gambia.
