Veteran Sports Journalist Kiawu to Head 2024 SWAL Awards Committee

Veteran sports journalist Hassan Kiawu has been appointed Chair of the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) 2024 Awards Committee.

Kiawu, who worked for over a decade as a correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in North America and the Caribbean, currently serves as Director for Media Services at the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS).

In a release, SWAL lauded Kiawu’s willingness to serve as chair of the Awards Committee, describing it as a testament to his unwavering love and commitment to the institution. He also serves as Chair of the Planning Committee, a statutory body of SWAL.

The nine-member committee is tasked with organizing all aspects of the awards program, set to be held by the first week of February 2025.

The committee members include:

  • Hassan Kiawu – Chair
  • Peterking Quaye – Co-Chair
  • Moses K. Garzeawu – Secretary General
  • Ernest McCay, Abraham Boimah, Oneal Roberts, Jerome Willie, Naomi Tappia, and Zoe Horace – Members

SWAL President Varmah Kamara has called on sports stakeholders to provide their support to ensure the committee’s success.

Meanwhile, SWAL was fully represented during the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) year-end meeting for English-speaking African countries on Thursday, December 19, 2024.

During the virtual meeting, AIPS President Giovanni Merlo provided updates on the organization’s 2024 activities and encouraged national associations to remain active in AIPS events despite financial challenges.

SWAL President Varmah Kamara assured President Merlo and AIPS executives of ongoing efforts to regularize Liberia’s membership status. Additionally, SWAL Vice President Christopher Walker appealed to AIPS for assistance in facilitating international training programs for Liberian sports journalists.
