Monrovia—Liberia Football Association President, Mustapha I. Raji, awarded full five-year scholarships to twelve students from the Sis Iye School System in the Barnersville Community on Saturday, October 12, 2024.
The LFA president instructed the school to select twelve students actively involved in football or sports to benefit from the scholarships. He urged the recipients to take their studies seriously and avoid distractions, emphasizing the importance of their education in securing a prosperous future and contributing to national development.
Although he does not have personal relationships with the parents of the scholarship recipients, Raji advised the students to focus on their studies while continuing their sports activities.
In addition to the scholarships, Raji pledged to donate two new computers and a generous sum of LD$300,000 to the school this Wednesday.
Serving as the commencement speaker at the school’s eighth graduation ceremony, Raji highlighted the need for the Ministry of Education to equip teachers and mentors with effective tools to enhance student learning.
“If we are to move forward as a nation, the Ministry of Education must begin equipping our teachers and mentors better,” he stated.
Raji also encouraged the graduates to be exemplary “ambassadors” for their alma mater and to continue their education at the university level.
Furthermore, he called on the parents of the students to maintain their cooperation with the school’s administration, noting that the fees they pay are minimal compared to the quality of education their children receive.
Speaking with journalists after the ceremony, ninth-grader Mary Johnson, who plays kickball, praised Raji’s generosity. She noted that only a person with a good heart could provide such scholarships during tough economic times.
“Thank you so much, Uncle, for the scholarship. Some of us are really struggling with school fees this year because our parents are facing job and financial challenges,” she explained.
