MONROVIA — Former Liberia Football Association (LFA) President Musa Hassan Bility has launched a harsh attack on FIFA, calling the world football governing body “10 times more corrupt” than the allegations that led to his own suspension.
Bility made the remarks Saturday during a late-night show on Spoon FM and its affiliate stations in Monrovia, dismissing FIFA’s credibility and fairness.
His comments come six years after FIFA banned him from all football-related activities for ten years. In 2019, the organization’s ethics committee found him guilty of misappropriating funds, conflicts of interest, and other violations of its code of ethics, imposing a $500,000 fine along with the suspension.
The sanctions prevent Bility from holding any administrative, sporting, or political positions at the national or international level, as well as from attending matches, participating in LFA events, or engaging in football politics. The case was linked to allegations that he misused funds from FIFA’s “11 Against Ebola” campaign and its Financial Assistance Programme.
Now a sitting legislator and leader of the Citizens Movement for Change political party, Bility questioned FIFA’s moral authority.
“I wouldn’t take FIFA to be a yardstick, an organization that is 10 times more corrupt than what they said about me,” Bility told listeners.
“FIFA is not a court of competent jurisdiction, and it has no such court,” he added.
Bility led the LFA from 2010 to 2018, winning the elections in March 2010 and 2014. In 2015, he announced a run for the FIFA presidency but was declared ineligible after failing an integrity check. FIFA did not reveal specific details, though reports at the time mentioned a previously dismissed criminal allegation in Liberia.
His tenure was controversial. In 2013, he was suspended for six months due to misuse of confidential documents. That same year, he opposed amendments to the Confederation of African Football election rules that allowed longtime CAF President Issa Hayatou to run unopposed.
