MONROVIA — Basketball fans were left disappointed over the weekend as two of Liberia’s top teams failed to deliver fireworks in what was billed as a high-stakes showdown between Sensational LPRC Oilers and Mighty Barrolle.
The matchup, played at the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) Gymnasium, drew loud cheers and heated exchanges among supporters during the teams’ entrance. But the on-court action fell short of expectations.
Despite securing a 45–38 win, the LPRC Oilers and Mighty Barrolle—both known for their offensive flair—couldn’t combine for 100 points in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the Liberia Basketball Association (LBA) First Division League season.
Backed in the stands by LPRC Managing Director Amos Tweh, the Oilers maintained their unbeaten run in the low-scoring, defense-heavy game. The teams combined for only nine points in the first quarter. By halftime, the score stood at 20–9 in favor of the Oilers—marking one of the lowest halftime tallies since the start of the 2025 LBA National League.
The win marked the third consecutive victory for the “Oil Boys” and handed Barrolle, the defending champions, their first loss of the season.
Speaking before the game, LPRC Oilers head coach Varflay Corneh said a major early challenge for his squad would be overcoming the reigning champions—and his team delivered.
In another First Division match on Sunday, the Barnersville Dragons dominated the Commissioners with a 60–35 blowout.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Division, defending champions Commissioners reaffirmed their supremacy with a commanding 75–38 win over Destiny Queens.
