Liberian Athletes Shine at World Chess Olympiad in Hungary

Abigail Karyah

MONROVIA — Team Liberia continues to deliver an impressive performance at the ongoing World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary.

About ten chess players, five female and five male, are representing Liberia in both the open and women’s sections.

In the women’s section, Abigail Karyah secured her first win against Brazil on Thursday. The 15-year-old extended her winning streak with a victory against Vanuatu on Friday, September 13, 2024.

Liberia triumphed over Monaco 4-0 in the Open Section on Friday, September 13, and drew 2-2 against a strong Panamanian team in the Women’s Section.

Georgina Sackie

The victory in the open section was spearheaded by Barcon Harmon, Obediah Saah, Leroy Debblay, and Arnold Smith. The quartet achieved a perfect 4/4, giving Liberia its first match win in the open section.

Liberia’s Female Chess Champion, Georgina Sackie, and Abigail Karyah, who is also the West Africa Women’s Vice Champion, fought back from a 2-0 deficit to secure a 2-2 draw against Panama.

Liberia is currently ranked 101st, having started at 138th.
