LFA Takes Responsibility for Players’ Age Discrepancy Before Senegal Game

Monrovia – The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has taken full responsibility for the age discrepancy incident that sidelined two national team players, Lawrence Kumeh and Daniel Nyumah, from participating in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Senegal. The issue arose when discrepancies between their ages listed in the FIFA Connect system and their official passports were flagged by Senegalese officials during pre-match inspections.

The incident has drawn significant attention, with Lone Star Head Coach Thomas Kojo expressing frustration over the matter, which he said disrupted the team’s preparations for the crucial African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier.

Appearing on the Truth Breakfast Show (TBS) on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, LFA President Mustapha I. Raji addressed the controversy, acknowledging the association’s oversight and pledging accountability. “We at LFA take full responsibility for the incident that occurred during the inspection before Sunday’s game with the discrepancy in our players’ ages,” Raji stated.

Raji assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the root cause of the error. “The integrity of our national team and the LFA is paramount. We will conduct a comprehensive investigation to understand what went wrong and take corrective measures,” he emphasized.

The incident has left uncertainty about the availability of Kumeh and Nyumah for the return leg in Senegal this Friday. Reports suggest that Senegalese officials are preparing a protest against striker William Gibson and former LFA MVP Edward Ledlum, both of whom are alleged to have signed professional contracts, raising additional eligibility concerns.

The African Nations Championship (CHAN), a biennial tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), mandates that participating teams comprise players who compete in their domestic leagues. This rule underscores the importance of accurate documentation for players selected to represent their nations.
