The Liberia Football Association (LFA), in partnership with Lonestar Cell MTN, has officially launched the second edition of the U-17 MoMo Community League, a grassroots football development program aimed at nurturing young talents across Liberia.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Lonestar Cell MTN’s Brand and Communication Manager, Abigail Nufeatalai, expressed the company’s excitement about partnering with the LFA to further support youth development through football.
Madam Nufeatalai noted that the management of Lonestar Cell MTN is particularly pleased that several players from the inaugural edition of the tournament have advanced to higher leagues.
She made specific reference to Beyan Yoko, who played for King Gray Community — the winners of the previous edition — and has since moved to Nigeria to pursue his football career.
Madam Nufeatalai also mentioned Myers Swen and Cacious Pewee, who played for Bardnersville Community, and are now playing for Liberian First Division clubs LISCR FC and Discoveries SA, respectively.
“Before we started the MoMo Community League, one of the things we told the LFA was that we didn’t just want to organize a league — we wanted to support grassroots football in a way that enables players to progress from the community level to bigger leagues,” Madam Nufeatalai emphasized.
She reaffirmed Lonestar Cell MTN’s commitment to supporting the three-year program, disclosing that sports development remains a key pillar of the company’s sponsorship strategy.
Providing an overview of the tournament, LFA Montserrado County Sub-Association Chairman, Melton Yoko, disclosed that 16 communities from Monrovia and its surroundings will participate in the competition.
He announced that the tournament champions will receive a cash prize of L$300,000, while the runners-up and third-place teams will receive L$200,000 and L$100,000, respectively.
According to Mr. Yoko, each participating community will receive L$72,000 to aid their preparation. Additionally, Lonestar Cell MTN will provide two sets of jerseys, including warm-up outfits, for all teams.
There will be awards for the Most Valuable Player, Best Defender, Best Goalkeeper, and a “King of the Match” award for each of the over 35 matches to be played during the tournament.
The LFA stated that players eligible to participate must be born on or after January 1, 2009, and on or before December 31, 2010 — setting the age limits at 15 and 16 years old.
Each community will be allowed to feature only five Third Division players within the stipulated age categories.
Additionally, players who have participated in the National County Sports Meet or represented Liberia at any youth national team level (U-15, U-17, or U-20) are ineligible to participate in the tournament.
