MONROVIA — The U.S.-based Jordan Nwora Foundation, in partnership with FIBA Africa Zone 3, has launched a three-day youth basketball training camp in Liberia, beginning Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
The camp, running through May 29, brings together more than 100 male and female athletes, ages 14 to 18, from various divisions of Liberian basketball and secondary schools.
The initiative aims to sharpen young players’ skills and deepen their appreciation for the sport at the grassroots level.
At a press conference Monday, Liberia Basketball Association (LBA) Secretary General Calvin Diggs emphasized the importance of the camp. He noted that the number of participants had grown from the initial projection of 100 to between 120 and 125.
He said the expansion followed a recommendation by the president of FIBA Zone 3, who observed local games and advocated for broader participation.
“The training is free of charge,” Diggs said. “Initially, we aimed for about 100 players, but after the president of FIBA Zone 3 watched games on Sunday, he suggested increasing the number. We’re now targeting between 120 and 125 participants, including students from high schools.”
Coach Alex Nwora, father of NBA player Jordan Nwora and director of the foundation, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to empowering young athletes.
“Jordan made a promise growing up—to give back to the next generation once he made it to the NBA,” Coach Nwora said. “This camp is a fulfillment of that promise.”
With more than 20 years of coaching experience, Nwora said he will focus on teaching fundamental basketball skills and helping young athletes refine their game during the camp.
Representing FIBA Zone 3, Colonel Sam Amadu expressed optimism that the camp will improve the quality of basketball in Liberia.
“During the recent FIBA Women’s Inter-Clubs competition hosted in Liberia, I observed a performance gap between Liberian clubs and their regional counterparts,” Amadu said. “I believe this camp will significantly elevate the standard of basketball in Liberia.”
The Jordan Nwora Foundation uses the power of sport to uplift underprivileged children in the United States and abroad. Through basketball camps and educational programs, the foundation promotes confidence, growth and development in young athletes while emphasizing education, healthy lifestyles and community engagement.
Since its founding in 2020, the foundation has hosted 22 camps across multiple countries, reaching more than 5,000 youth. At each event, the foundation engages with disadvantaged communities and donates footwear, clothing and school supplies to support young people’s aspirations.
Jordan Ifeanyi Nwora, born Sept. 9, 1998, is a Nigerian-American professional basketball player who currently plays for Anadolu Efes in the Turkish Basketbol Süper Ligi (BSL) and the EuroLeague.
He played college basketball for the Louisville Cardinals and represents the Nigeria men’s national basketball team internationally.
Nwora won an NBA championship with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021, was traded to the Indiana Pacers in 2023, then to the Toronto Raptors in 2024, before making the move to Europe.
