Inside LFA president’s staggering financial benefits

Monrovia – An extensive investigation by The Liberian Investigator has uncovered discrepancies in the financial claims made by Liberia Football Association (LFA) President Mustapha Raji.

These findings reveal a stark contrast between Raji’s public statements and the substantial financial benefits he receives.

Conflicting Statements

Between September 2018 and 2023, Raji consistently told sports journalists that he did not receive any honorarium from the LFA. “I am not rich; I am not poor. The LFA can’t pay me, and I came to serve football,” he often stated.

However, in July 2024, his narrative shifted. Responding angrily to inquiries during a day-long press conference, he admitted that he receives a monthly US$150 rechargeable card from Orange Liberia, similar to other executive committee members, and that he frequently struggles to buy fuel for his car.

Investigation Findings

Contrary to Raji’s repeated claims of financial hardship, the investigation has uncovered a different reality.

As LFA President, Raji receives an annual stipend of US$25,000 from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Additionally, as a CAF Executive Committee member, he earns US$80,000 annually, a figure that has recently increased.

Beyond his salary, Raji also enjoys various perks, including travel and accommodation expenses for official CAF and FIFA functions. This starkly contradicts his portrayal of financial struggles, especially considering that in 2022, the LFA purchased a vehicle worth US$42,287.50 for his official use.

Criticism and Public Response

Critics argue that Raji’s claims of struggling to afford fuel are misleading, given the significant financial benefits he receives from his roles in football administration.

On February 15, 2025, Senior Female Professional President Emmett Stages Glassco, speaking on Joy FM, urged Raji to stop misrepresenting his financial status. “How can you claim financial hardship while driving a US$42,000 car and earning a combined US$105,000 from CAF?” he questioned.

Glassco further noted that Raji has had more travel opportunities and international recognition than many other football administrators, further highlighting the financial advantages of his position.
