Several European clubs are eyeing 23-year-old Liberian defender Sampson Dweh, who currently plays for Czech club Viktoria Plzeň.
Among the interested clubs, Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City appears to be the most serious, as Dweh fits well into the Foxes’ possession-based playstyle. The Liberian defender is known for his ability to break through the defensive line both in and out of possession, winning the ball in midfield or progressing it forward.
Dweh’s heat map from the 2024-25 Czech Republic Chance Liga shows that he primarily operates on the right side of the defense, providing both an aggressive and progressive presence for Plzeň. His defensive timing and awareness are exceptional for his age, and when compared to his peers across Europe’s top five leagues, he ranks above the 90th percentile in all defensive categories. Additionally, he excels in shots taken, progressive passes received, and expected assists—qualities that could make him a valuable asset for Leicester City.
Out of possession, Dweh’s determination, pressing instincts, and ability to win the ball make him a defensive force capable of halting opposition attacks and allowing the Foxes to build from the back into the final third. On the ball, he refuses to remain static—he pushes forward, supports progression and retention, and even looks for shooting opportunities when possible.
In Nistelrooy’s system, Dweh would be a direct replacement—and a significant defensive upgrade—for Wout Faes. Leicester may not be the only club monitoring the Liberian, but they appear to be the most serious contenders. Even if the Foxes are relegated to the Championship, they will need a player who can strengthen their starting XI and fit into Nistelrooy’s tactical setup. That player could very well be Dweh, regardless of the transfer fee required.
Dweh has been an ever-present figure in the Chance Liga and Europa League this season. With four goals in the 2024-25 campaign, he has also proven to be a threat from set pieces. Another English side, Sheffield United, is reportedly eager to secure his signature if they secure promotion to the Premier League this season. United currently sits third in the Championship.
Meanwhile, Premier League side Wolves and German Bundesliga club Wolfsburg have also been keeping a close eye on Dweh’s performances in recent matches.
So far this season, Dweh has made 40 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing one assist. The former LPRC Oilers defender only joined Viktoria Plzeň on a permanent deal from Czech side MFK Vyškov last summer (2024) after spending a season on loan.
