Historic father-son duo feature in LBA League

PAYNESVILLE — In a historic first in the over three-decade history of the Liberia Basketball Association (LBA) National League, a father-son duo featured for the same team over the weekend at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex basketball gymnasium.

Wallace Seongbar Sr. and his 18-year-old son, Wallace T. Seongbar Jr., became the talk of the court when Bushrod Dreams faced off against Bushrod Ballers in a highly contested Division II clash.

The pair were instrumental in helping Bushrod Dreams secure a 63-53 victory in the Bushrod Island derby on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

Their departure from the court was met with overwhelming applause as fans and officials celebrated the rare and inspiring moment of a father and son playing side by side.

The atmosphere inside the gymnasium was electric, with cheers echoing throughout in celebration of the duo’s unique partnership.

A Dream Come True for Wallace Seongbar Sr.

Speaking with The Liberian Investigator following their first win of the new LBA season, Wallace Seongbar Sr. expressed joy at sharing the court with his son.

“I am over-happy to see myself playing with my son, and I am proud of this growth in the sport,” he said, reflecting on the special bond they now share through basketball.

Seongbar Sr., who became a father at age 22, emphasized the importance of mutual respect both on and off the court.

“I always advise him during games and training to be respectful and hardworking as a young sports talent. Many times, he and I discuss our games at home—whether we win or lose,” he added.

Wallace Seongbar Jr.: Living His Dream

For his part, Wallace Seongbar Jr. described playing alongside his father in Liberia’s top basketball league as a dream come true.

“Many people ask how I manage playing on the same team with my father,” he said with a smile.

When asked if he feels pressure sharing the court with his dad, the younger Seongbar dismissed the notion.

“I feel no pressure at all. In fact, I love getting on the bus with my dad after games and practice,” he said.

LBA President Applauds the Duo

Liberia Basketball Association President Abraham Samuka praised the Seongbars for their participation, describing their story as a testament to the power of family in sports.

“I would love to see more father-and-son or mother-and-daughter pairings in the league. This is a great example of how basketball can bring families together,” Samuka said.

With their inspiring debut as teammates, Wallace Seongbar Sr. and Wallace Seongbar Jr. have set a new precedent in Liberian basketball—proving that the game isn’t just about competition, but also about family, legacy, and dreams fulfilled.
