GOTHENBURG, Sweden — A Swedish court has sentenced former Liberian international footballer Dulee Johnson to seven months in prison after finding him guilty of multiple counts of assault and molestation, according to international media reports.
The charges stem from a series of incidents between March and May this year, during which the court determined that Johnson, 39, repeatedly assaulted a female victim. The court ruled that his actions demonstrated a pattern of aggression in violation of Swedish criminal law.
In addition to the prison term, Johnson was ordered to pay $3,665 in damages. The court noted that restitution would not reduce or replace the custodial sentence.
This is not Johnson’s first legal controversy in Sweden. In October 2010, he was detained on suspicion of rape, accused of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman at his apartment in Solna earlier that year. Swedish daily Aftonbladet reported that investigators had gathered strong evidence at the time, including witness testimony from a friend of Johnson’s who was present during the alleged incident.
Contacted after the latest verdict, Johnson denied all allegations and said he plans to appeal the conviction within the legally allowed timeframe.
Born on November 7, 1984, Johnson was known for his creative play as both a midfielder and striker. He enjoyed a successful European club career, most notably with AIK in Sweden, where he helped the team secure both the Allsvenskan and Svenska Cupen titles in 2009.
On the international stage, Johnson earned 35 caps for Liberia between 2001 and 2016 and played in the 2002 African Cup of Nations.
He became a Swedish citizen in March 2010, gaining EU player status while with AIK. Despite ongoing legal troubles, Johnson remains a notable figure in the history of Liberian football.
