Doxxbet sponsorship sparks controversy over alleged political influence in LFA elections

Monrovia – Doxxbet Liberia’s latest sponsorship deal with eight football clubs has ignited debate within Liberia’s football community, raising concerns about transparency and potential political maneuvering ahead of the Liberia Football Association (LFA) elections.

On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, the betting company formalized agreements with five First Division clubs, two Second Division clubs, and one Upper Women’s Division team. The selected beneficiaries include Global Pharma FC, Cece United FC, Bushord Queen FC, Pags FC, Mighty Barrolle FC, Freeport FC, Invincible Eleven FC, and Shaita FC.

While the deal provides much-needed financial relief to these clubs, its selection process has come under scrutiny. At the signing ceremony, Doxxbet CEO Michal Gabor revealed that LFA President Mustapha Raji personally oversaw the selection of the beneficiaries—a disclosure that has fueled speculation about political interference.

The controversy deepened when Gabor hinted that if the sponsorship extends into the next season, President Raji would again determine which clubs receive support. This revelation has raised concerns about whether the sponsorship is being used as leverage in the run-up to the 2026 LFA elections.

Allegations of Favoritism and Political Influence

The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from football stakeholders who argue that selective sponsorship undermines the principle of fairness in the league.

“You can’t be one of the sponsors of the league, expect all of us to promote your product, and then decide to engage in selective sponsorship,” said Jallah Corvah, CEO of Senior Female Professionals, in the Talk Football chatroom.

Corvah went further, alleging that Doxxbet’s involvement in Liberian football may have political undertones. He suggested the company is being used by a specific candidate to secure influence ahead of the elections.

“My club can’t support Doxxbet or participate in any activities that promote the company, including the FA closing program, if they are a participant in the FA election process,” Corvah declared.

Despite mounting concerns, President Raji has remained silent on the issue, leaving room for speculation about the motives behind the sponsorship arrangement.

Doxxbet’s Broader Role in Liberian Football

Doxxbet has played a prominent role in Liberian football sponsorship in recent years. The company has been the lead sponsor of the LFA Awards for the past five editions.

In 2023, it signed a three-year sponsorship deal valued at US$125,000 for individual awards, building on its initial 2019 agreement, which began with a US$24,000 sponsorship and was later increased to US$100,000 over three years.
