MONROVIA — James Debbah, one of Liberia’s most celebrated soccer stars, recently stirred conversation on social media by suggesting the retirement of the iconic #10 jersey following Liberia’s 1-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea. This number is currently worn by striker Emmanuel Ernest, who has struggled to make a significant impact since his debut against Togo, having donned the #10 jersey in only two matches.
Ernest, born to a Nigerian father and a Liberian mother, responded to the criticism with a brief message, stating, “We keep going while they are talking.”
Debbah, who scored 42 goals in 73 appearances for Liberia wearing the #10 jersey, clarified his intentions behind the post, emphasizing that it was not meant to denigrate Ernest. “Emmanuel Ernest, my last post about retiring the #10 jersey was in no way aimed at denigrating or throwing a jibe at you,” Debbah explained. The 54-year-old also apologized, acknowledging the hard work and dedication required to succeed in professional sports.
“I have seen glimpses of what you are capable of, and I know you can do more. I want you to explore your full potential when you wear the ‘Red, White, and Blue’ jersey, just like the legends before you,” Debbah encouraged Ernest. He further emphasized, “You are the marksman of your club in Switzerland, a prolific goalscorer. I want you to replicate those performances when playing for your country.”
Debbah, who played for 14 clubs across Africa, Asia, and Europe, including stints with French giants PSG and Lyon, made over 300 appearances in his career, scoring 162 goals.
Emmanuel Ernest joined Swiss Challenge League club FC Aarau earlier this year, moving from Northern Cyprus club Cintenkaya, where he scored 29 goals and provided seven assists in one season. The 23-year-old muscular striker has already netted four goals this season for Aarau.
