WIGAN, England — Wigan Athletic have announced the signing of striker Christian Saydee from Portsmouth FC on a three-year deal, pending approval from the English Football League (EFL) and the Football Association (FA). The 23-year-old joins the League One side for an undisclosed fee.
Saydee, who is of Liberian descent and hails from Hillingdon, London, becomes the first forward addition to the Brick Community Stadium under new head coach Ryan Lowe ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.
“It’s brilliant that Christian has decided to join us and commit to the project here at Wigan Athletic,” Lowe said. “He will fit really well into what we’re looking to build here.”
Saydee began his career in the AFC Bournemouth Academy and made six senior appearances for the club. He had loan stints at Poole Town, Weymouth, Burton Albion, and notably Shrewsbury Town, where he featured in 38 league matches and scored seven goals.
His performances at Shrewsbury earned him a permanent move to Portsmouth in 2023. Saydee made 73 appearances for Pompey and played a pivotal role in their promotion to the Championship during the 2023–24 season.
At Wigan, Saydee will wear the club’s iconic No. 9 shirt.
“I’m very happy to be here,” Saydee said. “I’ve thought about this move for a while, and it’s a massive decision. I spoke to the gaffer, and he emphasised how I could fit into the squad. I’m excited to meet everyone and just want to get started now.”
Wigan sporting director Gregor Rioch also expressed confidence in the signing.
“Christian is just 23 years old, and we believe he will continue to develop under Ryan and our coaching team,” Rioch said. “He has all the attributes we are looking for, and I’m excited to see him in a Wigan shirt over the next few years.”
Saydee joins midfielder Fraser Murray as part of the Latics’ early summer acquisitions, with the club expected to bolster its attacking options further in the coming weeks.
