Basketball: Mighty Barrolle Lift First Division Title

MONROVIA — Mighty Barrolle have clinched the 2024 Liberia Basketball Association (LBA) First Division title with two games to spare.

The ‘Rollers’ defeated Cestos Mongars 59-46 in the third game of the best-of-five final series on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at the SKD Gymnasium.

Having lost the first two pairings, expectations were high that the Mongars would push for a fourth match.

But Barrolle came prepared for the sweep, dominating from the first to the fourth quarter. With Nigerian basketballer Joseph Chibuzor, who was named man of the match in the second game, and Senegalese Omar Colley, the ‘Rollers’ displayed strength in both defense and attack, making it difficult for the Mongars to penetrate.

However, the real star for Barrolle on the night was Joel Martor, who scored 25 points and recorded four rebounds. The former NPA Pythons star was named man of the match.

Although Cestos Mongars were defeated, their return to the top flight showed glimpses of improved performances.

On their way to the final, the Mongars defeated basketball heavyweights NPA Pythons, LPRC Oilers, and Mighty Barrolle, as well as last season’s finalists, LTC Bushrod Bulls.

Meanwhile, the best-of-five series of the 2024 National Basketball Championship continues tomorrow, Wednesday, at the SKD Gymnasium with matches in the 2nd Division and Women’s Division.

Spartacus might be crowned champions if they can secure a win against Highway Kings in game four of the series.

Spartacus lead 2-1 after collecting two wins in three matches, but a win for Highway Kings will push the series to a decisive game five to determine the champion. Their match is scheduled for 5 p.m.

In the Women’s Division at 7 p.m., Commissioners will need another win to retain their championship. The defending champions have won two out of three matches, while Invincible Eleven’s women’s team has secured just one win in the series.
