Unity Party National Youth Congress Announces Boycott of Independence Day Celebrations

MONROVIA — The Unity Party National Youth Congress (UPNYC) has publicly expressed “profound disappointment and frustration” with the current administration in a statement released on Tuesday. The UPNYC cited ongoing obstacles in accessing the Presidency since the inauguration as a primary concern.

“We cannot, in good conscience, participate in further activities commemorating our nation’s 177th Independence Day when there is a glaring lack of independence and fair representation within the National Youth Congress,” the statement declared.

Evan Tuku, National Secretary General of UPNYC, highlighted several grievances, singling out Chairman Melvin Cephas, along with partisans Kruah-Togba and Joseph K. Vallai, for unilateral actions such as organizing a youth town hall meeting with the Presidency reportedly costing $15k, without consulting all NYC members, particularly those aligned with Pro Luther Tarpeh.

Secretary General Tuku noted that disregarded members included Greene II, Pokan, Kuitay, and several County Chairs, emphasizing a pattern of marginalizing NYC leaders at national and county levels.

“Allegations and proven claims of corruption by Chairman Melvin Cephas regarding campaign funds and operational expenses intended for the National Youth Congress are deeply troubling,” the statement continued.

The UPNYC accused Cephas of consistently ignoring, disrespecting, and showing disdain towards fellow National Youth Congress leaders, including failing to respond to recent communications and neglecting constitutional obligations such as convening an NEC meeting.

Additionally, the statement detailed multiple accusations against Chairman Cephas, including misusing NYC assets, soliciting funds without transparency, and engaging in divisive politics against current leadership. UPNYC criticized Cephas for failing to facilitate a requested meeting with the Standard Bearer and President to address nationwide issues affecting NYC members.

The UPNYC urged stakeholders to heed their grievances and support efforts to reform the National Youth Congress for positive change.

In response, Youth League Chairperson Melvin Cephas dismissed the statement, asserting his refusal to acknowledge its credibility as voiced by a majority of UPNYC members.
