MONROVIA – Nimba County Senator, Prince Johnson, has expressed concerns about the current governance style of the Unity Party (UP) administration, warning that if things continue in the same manner, it will be very difficult for the party to win the 2029 presidential election.
Speaking at his Christ Chapel of Faith Ministry in Paynesville on Sunday, September 8, 2024, Senator Johnson reflected on his political predictions during the 2023 elections, where he claimed to have foretold that former President George Weah would become a one-term President.
According to him, his prediction came true when Weah lost the presidency in 2023.
Now, Senator Johnson says he envisions a similar challenge for the Unity Party should they fail to address pressing issues within their government.
The often controversial senator emphasized that the way the Unity Party is currently governing the country poses significant risks to their chances of maintaining power in the future.
He suggested that the performance of the current administration will directly affect the outcome of the next election, with the possibility of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) returning to power, depending largely on how well the Unity Party addresses the concerns of the Liberian people.
Senator Johnson specifically pointed to what he believes are “illegal dismissals” of Liberians and the growing number of alleged corruption scandals within the government.
He argued that these actions are creating dissatisfaction among the public and could lead to serious consequences for the Unity Party.
“Liberians are watching,” he said, stressing that the same people who voted for the Unity Party can just as easily remove them from power in 2029.
He went on to express disappointment with certain elements of the current administration, claiming that some of the very issues that led Liberians to vote out the previous government are now re-emerging under the new leadership.
He said he felt “sad” that the public is once again being confronted with what he described as a failure to adequately address corruption and governance issues.
Senator Johnson, an influential voice in his native Nimba County, called on the Unity Party administration and lawmakers to be more careful in their governance of the country.
He advised them to take the concerns of the Liberian people seriously, warning that if they do not, the public may respond at the ballot box in 2029 by voting them out of office.
Senator Johnson urged the Unity Party to reflect on the reasons why the previous administration was removed from power, noting that ignoring these lessons could lead to history repeating itself.
