Karnplay Former Mayor Cited Over Unauthorized Celebration of Former President Weah’s 58th Birthday

GANTA, Nimba – The Mayor of Karnplay City has cited former Mayor Philip B. Flomo to answer claims that he gathered “men and women” on the streets of Karnplay City to celebrate former President George Weah’s 58th birthday.

Liberia’s 25th president, George Manneh Weah, turned 58 years old on October 1, 2024. Officials and sympathizers of his Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) gathered at the party’s headquarters in Monrovia and other places across the country in observance of the day.

Former Mayor Flomo, a staunch supporter of the CDC, joined in the celebration by gathering jubilant supporters and sympathizers of the party in Karnplay to parade with banners bearing birthday messages and photos of former President Weah.

The celebration parade in the city did not please Karnplay City Mayor Daybah Zayn, who condemned the former Mayor’s actions.

Mayor Zayn accused Flomo of not seeking permission from his office before assembling people in the streets.

Furthermore, on October 2, 2024, Mayor Zayn cited Flomo to appear at his office on October 3 to provide clarity on his actions. “You are officially cited to appear in our office on Thursday, October 3, 2024, to provide clarity on your action,” the letter from the Mayor’s office stated.

When contacted, the former Mayor admitted that he gathered supporters and sympathizers of the CDC on the streets of Karnplay to celebrate the 58th birthday of their standard-bearer, George Manneh Weah. He cut the celebration short when the police asked them to leave the main street.

“We actually intended to celebrate on the main road, but the police advised us to use the back road, and we complied. In fact, we used the back road to go to my residence, where we climaxed our activities,” Flomo explained.

He accused Mayor Zayn of hurling insults at him through a phone call on one of the local radio stations in the city on October 1, before delivering to him a letter of citation during the early evening hours of October 2, summoning him to appear at the city corporation for inquiries.
