Subject: Urgent Appeal to Address Constitutional Violations and Corruption in Liberia
I write as a deeply concerned citizen of Liberia, alarmed by a series of troubling events that threaten the democratic principles and constitutional framework of our nation. These developments not only undermine the rule of law but also erode public confidence in governance and justice for the people of Liberia.
My immediate concern relates to the flagrantly unlawful and unjust efforts by certain elements within the Liberian government to remove the constitutionally elected Speaker of the 55th Legislature of the Republic of Liberia, Honorable J. Fonati Koffa. These illegal actions appear to be triggered by Speaker Koffa’s courageous and uncompromising stance against corruption, a position that has evidently provoked resistance from powerful figures who prioritize self-interest over accountability and the rule of law in Liberia.
In a decision to blatantly disregard the definitive ruling by the Supreme Court affirming Hon. Koffa as the legitimate Speaker of the 55th Legislature, an illegal block of misinformed Representatives unlawfully appointed an alternate Speaker. This action marked a clear violation of the Liberian Constitution and the rule of law.
This egregious disregard for judicial authority is further compounded by widespread corruption within the legislature. Disturbingly, video evidence circulating on social media depicts lawmakers being bribed to support the illegal removal of Speaker Koffa. Such actions represent a profound betrayal of public trust and the fundamental principles of governance and accountability.
Equally concerning is the role of the executive branch in this crisis. The President and key officials have not only failed to uphold the Supreme Court’s decision but have also been implicated in actions that undermine democratic institutions. This deliberate subversion of justice and constitutional order sets a dangerous precedent and jeopardizes Liberia’s fragile stability and hard won democracy.
In light of these dire circumstances, I urgently appeal to Embassy of the United states and all international partners committed to democracy, human rights, and good governance, to take immediate and decisive action. Specifically, I call upon you to:
- Suspend Financial Support: Temporarily withhold financial assistance to the Liberian government until concrete steps are taken to restore constitutional order and combat systemic corruption;
- Demand Accountability: Advocate for an independent investigation into the actions of both the government and legislature, ensuring that those responsible for undermining the constitution are held accountable;
- Support Democratic Institutions: Provide technical and financial assistance to strengthen Liberia’s judiciary, legislature, and civil society organizations to uphold the principles of democracy and the rule of law;
- Monitor the Situation Closely: Establish mechanisms for ongoing international oversight to deter further abuse of power and ensure Liberia adheres to its constitutional commitments.
Liberia has long benefited from the generous support and partnership of the United States government, it is crucial that this partnership continues to promote governance that aligns with the principles of justice, accountability, and service to the Liberian people.
Liberians deserve a leadership that prioritizes their welfare and respects the rule of law. I respectfully implore you to act decisively in support of restoring constitutional order and standing with the people of Liberia in their pursuit of justice and good governance.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this critical matter.
Sincerely
Courage Sundberg
