Monrovia — The Students Unification Party (SUP), a prominent student advocacy group at the University of Liberia, has issued a stern warning to the government, threatening to disrupt President Joseph Boakai’s State of the Nation Address if the University does not reopen as scheduled on January 13.
This ultimatum follows what SUP describes as a “prolonged delay” in resuming academic activities at the University. Over the weekend, university authorities reassured the public that the institution would reopen on January 13, 2025, following months of delay. Additionally, a new university president is set to be installed on Friday, January 10.
The university has been closed since last August.
Despite these assurances, SUP Chairperson Sylvester Wheeler expressed skepticism, dismissing the university’s reopening plans as mere social media rhetoric.
Speaking during a public demonstration on Monday, January 6, Wheeler and other SUP members toured the principal streets of Monrovia, urging the government to take immediate action to ensure the University of Liberia reopens as promised.
“We will not give credence to what they described as a mere Facebook post regarding the opening of the University,” Wheeler declared. “If the University does not open on January 13, we will ensure the State of the Nation Address is disrupted.”
SUP has consistently criticized what it perceives as government neglect of the University of Liberia and the broader education sector. The group argues that the institution’s prolonged closure has jeopardized the academic future of thousands of students, intensifying frustration among the student body.
