CHINA — Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence is currently in the People’s Republic of China, leading a delegation participating in the 2024 Legislator’s Forum for Friendly Exchanges. This marks her first visit to China, following an invitation.
In her opening remarks, Madam Karnga-Lawrence addressed a gathering of legislators from various countries and China, stating that the trip to China is an opportunity to network with colleagues from other nations, and to share Liberian experiences and ideas, particularly on global peace and sustainable development.
The two-member delegation includes Montserrado County Senator Darius Dillon, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, and the Senate Pro-Tempore, who is also the administrative head of the Senate, along with other personal staff.
“In a few days, I will be speaking at the event on the topic ‘Poverty Eradication and Sustainability,’” Karnga-Lawrence announced.
“Your Excellency Vice President, to share a portion of that speech, ending poverty is a global concern that can be effectively addressed if we include economic cooperation, infrastructure development, capacity building, cultural exchange, and regional cooperation in our bilateral relationships.”
She also reassured China that the bilateral relationship between the two countries (China and Liberia) will continue to foster growth in trade and investment, with a focus on sustainable development that benefits both nations.
“In my capacity as President Pro-Tempore of our Senate, we have played our role and will continue to do so by ensuring that laws are passed to support our vision for poverty eradication and sustainability. We will also continue our engagements to strengthen this relationship.”
“We express our gratitude for the courtesy and experiences we have had so far. Our visit to the National Museum today has deepened our understanding of the People’s Republic of China, and it was an excellent experience,” she added.
She thanked the Chinese Vice President for taking the time to meet with her delegation, noting that the meeting will have a lasting impact on the delegates’ political journey and service to their country.
“In closing, we want to thank your ambassador to Liberia, His Excellency Chengwu Yin, for maintaining an excellent diplomatic relationship. We look forward to more such visits and engagements to address our pressing challenges in our respective countries.”
The People’s Republic of China and Liberia have maintained diplomatic ties for 47 years. This relationship has grown stronger and more beneficial, especially after our civil crisis, due to critical interventions in multiple sectors, including infrastructure, education, health, and economic development.
