“Patience leads to success” – Burphy advises Shining Light quizzing teams

PAYNESVILLE – The Deputy Director General for Lotto Games at the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Richlue O. Burphy, has urged students and young people across Liberia to refrain from engaging in gambling activities.

Addressing members of the Shining Light National Quizzing Organization, Burphy emphasized the importance of patience and timing in both life and competition.

Drawing from personal experience, he explained how strategic timing plays a crucial role in achieving success. His message sought to motivate the young participants, instilling in them a spirit of perseverance and thoughtful decision-making as they prepare for future contests.

Speaking at the recently concluded quizzing competition finals—where he was honored for his contributions to youth and child development in Liberia—Burphy remarked, “Life, much like quizzing, operates on timing. Possessing knowledge and skills is valuable, but acting prematurely without adequate preparation can lead to missed opportunities. If you rush into things, you might not enjoy them when the right moment comes. Always remember to wait for your time, because timing is key to success.”

He noted that his concerns stemmed from widespread reports of underage students engaging in gambling, particularly through the use of Chinese gaming machines scattered across the country.

Burphy warned, “If any of you are involved in gambling, I strongly advise you to stop. It will divert your focus from your education, push you into adulthood prematurely, and potentially lead you down a troubling path of bad habits.”

He further stressed, “Think about it—those Chinese nationals operating these gambling machines will eventually return to their home country to live comfortably with their families, while you risk losing sight of your future. Life is all about timing, and if you do not exercise patience, you may not truly appreciate opportunities when they finally come your way.”

Encouraging the young quizzers to confront challenges and learn from setbacks, Burphy added, “Every quiz presents a chance to grow. Instead of feeling disheartened by defeat, use it as a learning experience to refine your skills.”

Concluding his remarks, he expressed confidence in the potential of Liberia’s youth, saying, “You are the future leaders, visionaries, and innovators of this nation. Remember, every major achievement requires time and dedication. Stay determined, and your moment will come.”

Burphy also appointed the quiz participants as advocates against underage gambling, urging them to report instances where peers are engaged in such activities.

In response, Gospellee Livingproof, the leader of the Shining Light National Quizzing Organization, extended appreciation for Burphy’s guidance and support. He described the remarks as timely, stating, “Your words deeply resonate with us. We often feel immense pressure to succeed, but recognizing the importance of timing allows us to concentrate on preparation rather than just results.”
