Liberia’s World Bank fisheries project begins AIS transponders distribution

Bushrod Island – The Government of Liberia, through the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), with funding from the World Bank under the Liberia Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project (LSMFP), on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, began distributing 400 Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders to local fishermen at Popo Beach, Bushrod Island, Montserrado County. The initiative aims to enhance safety and efficiency in the fishing sector.

According to a joint press statement from NaFAA and LSMFP, the transponders are being distributed to licensed fisherfolk in Montserrado, Grand Bassa, and Grand Cape Mount counties. This deployment is expected to significantly improve real-time monitoring capabilities and facilitate swift emergency responses, ensuring the safety of fishermen at sea. Additionally, the transponders will enable precise tracking of artisanal fishing vessels, help prevent losses, and optimize fishing routes for increased efficiency.

The introduction of AIS transponders marks a pivotal advancement in navigational tracking and communication among small-scale fishermen. These devices play a crucial role in sustainable fish stock management and the fight against overfishing by providing essential data on fishing patterns and locations.

The AIS transponder is a state-of-the-art, portable device equipped with multiple power options, including rechargeable batteries, wired connections, and solar energy compatibility. Its design ensures adaptability to various environmental conditions. The transponder operates in two modes—normal and emergency alert—activated by distinct buttons, maximizing its utility in both standard operations and critical emergencies. This versatility guarantees reliable performance under a range of scenarios.

Meanwhile, the joint press release noted that the Liberia Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project (LSMFP) will provide comprehensive technical support and training to users of small-scale and semi-industrial vessels, ensuring the successful adoption and utilization of this innovative technology.

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority, through the Liberia Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project, reiterates its commitment to enhancing fisheries governance, improving livelihoods, and boosting revenue generation for the government and people of Liberia.
