Liberia Pledges Support for Global Humanitarian Efforts at 34th Red Cross Conference in Geneva

Geneva, Switzerland — The Government of Liberia has renewed its commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts and upholding the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement at the 34th International Conference of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent (ICRC) in Geneva. Delivering a statement on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Liberia’s Assistant Minister for International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Karishma Pelham-Raad, underscored Liberia’s dedication to the humanitarian values of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and voluntary service.

In her address, Pelham-Raad described the conference as “a beacon of hope and unity,” noting the essential role of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in a world beset by conflicts, disasters, and crises, particularly referencing the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East. She emphasized that in such challenging times, countries have a shared responsibility to promote international humanitarian law, protect human dignity, and address the needs of the most vulnerable populations.

“Liberia reaffirms its unwavering support for the core principles and objectives of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement,” Pelham-Raad stated. She highlighted Liberia’s collaborative efforts with the movement in providing lifesaving assistance, reuniting families separated by crises, and promoting disaster preparedness. These actions, she said, reflect Liberia’s commitment to alleviating human suffering and fostering a culture of peace and resilience.

Addressing the evolving global humanitarian landscape, Pelham-Raad pointed to the challenges posed by climate change, the refugee crisis, and pandemics. She called for a dual approach of immediate humanitarian aid coupled with long-term strategies to tackle the root causes of suffering and vulnerability. “These complex crises demand that we not only respond with immediate humanitarian assistance but also invest in long-term solutions,” she noted.

In her closing remarks, Pelham-Raad called on member states and humanitarian partners to strengthen multilateral efforts, ensuring that humanitarian access and the protection of civilians—especially women and children—remain paramount in collective endeavors. Expressing Liberia’s gratitude for the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s relentless work, she reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to advancing a world where human dignity is upheld and every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

The 34th ICRC conference brought together distinguished delegates and representatives from around the world, united in their commitment to addressing global humanitarian challenges and working towards a safer, more equitable future for all.
