Liberia officially announces commencement of Ramadan

Monrovia – The Ramadan Crescent Sighting Committee of the National Muslim Council of Liberia, in collaboration with the Majlis Fatwa, has officially confirmed the sighting of the new moon, marking the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan 1446.

The announcement was made on Friday, February 28, 2025, corresponding to the 29th of Sha’ban 1446 in the Islamic calendar. As a result, the first day of fasting will commence on Saturday, March 1, 2025. The confirmation aligns with the crescent sighting in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries, ensuring a unified start to Ramadan across the region.

Muslim Community Urged to Observe Ramadan with Devotion

The committee has called on all eligible Muslims to begin their fast as prescribed in the Holy Qur’an. A statement from the National Muslim Council of Liberia encouraged the faithful to increase their acts of worship, including prayer, Qur’anic recitation, and charitable deeds. This aligns with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who said:

“When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of Heaven are opened, and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1899)

Leaders Call for Unity and Peace During Ramadan

The leadership of the Muslim community extended their gratitude to the Government and people of Liberia for maintaining peace and stability. They urged Imams and Islamic scholars to spread awareness of the announcement in mosques and through media platforms, encouraging Muslims to embrace the sacred month with sincerity and devotion.

The official statement was delivered by Imam Salleh Abbas Kanneh, Head of the Body of Imams, and signed by Imam Abdullah G. Mansaray, Chairman of the Ramadan Crescent Sighting Committee. It was further attested by Alhaji Ibrahim Fumba Sherif of the National Muslim Council of Liberia and approved by Dr. Abbas S. A. Kanneh, Grand Mufti of the Republic of Liberia.

President Boakai Extends Greetings to Muslims in Liberia and Beyond

Meanwhile, President Joseph Boakai, Sr. has extended warm greetings and best wishes to the Muslim community in Liberia and around the world as they begin the sacred month of Ramadan.

In a goodwill message, President Boakai acknowledged the significance of Ramadan as a time of fasting, prayer, and spiritual renewal. He emphasized the importance of unity and togetherness, highlighting that faith in Almighty Allah serves as a shared foundation for national cohesion.

Quoting the Holy Qur’an, he reminded Liberians of their interdependence, stating that the actions of one group inevitably impact the nation as a whole. He urged all citizens to embrace peace, love, and unity as they work toward national development.

The President called on the Muslim community to use this holy season to pray for Liberia’s peace and progress. He reaffirmed his commitment to fostering religious harmony and encouraged all Liberians to “Think Liberia, Love Liberia, and Build Liberia.”
