MONROVIA – The Liberian government has officially acquired ownership of the building housing the Liberia Geological Survey (LGS), ending years of rental payments and solidifying its commitment to scientific development and infrastructure.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, with support from the General Services Agency (GSA), completed the final payment for the one-storey structure located in the Old Road community of Montserrado County. A deed for the property was handed over to government authorities by the owner, John T. Richardson, in a brief ceremony attended by senior officials.
Deputy Minister for Administration Eudora Blay-Pritchard described the acquisition as a major milestone for the ministry. She noted that with budgetary backing, the building will undergo renovations to be transformed into a modern laboratory for scientific data analysis.
“This is not just a building — it’s an investment in Liberia’s scientific capacity and sovereignty over its geological data,” Blay-Pritchard said. “We are grateful to Mr. Richardson and the GSA for making this long-term vision a reality.”
The building has long served as the headquarters for the LGS, a division of the ministry responsible for collecting and analyzing geological data. LGS Director Anthony Kullie praised the administration of Mines and Energy Minister Wilmot Paye for completing the property’s purchase, calling it a “historic moment” for Liberia’s scientific sector.
Kullie also welcomed the announcement that a new office for the LGS will soon be constructed at the ministry’s central headquarters in Monrovia.
Thursday’s ceremony was attended by GSA Real Estate Director Moses S. Gaygay, Mines and Energy Assistant Minister for Administration Cooper Paasewe, and several ministry staff.
