VIENNA, Austria – Karishma Pelham-Raad, Liberia’s Assistant Minister for International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has successfully completed a rigorous five-day course on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament at the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP).
The comprehensive program delved into pivotal subjects such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), various non-proliferation regimes, arms control measures, and the multifaceted challenges and solutions associated with global disarmament efforts. Participants had the unique opportunity to engage with leading experts and peers from around the world, fostering a collaborative environment for in-depth discussions on pressing international security issues.
Expressing her gratitude and enthusiasm, Pelham-Raad shared, “It was a great opportunity to deepen my understanding of these important global security issues and engage with experts and peers from around the world.” She further emphasized her commitment to applying the knowledge gained in her future endeavors and serving as an inspiration to young women, stating, “This milestone is for every young girl and woman out there. Remember, you can achieve anything once you put your mind to it.”
The VCDNP, established in 2010, is dedicated to promoting international peace and security through research, dialogue, and capacity-building initiatives focused on non-proliferation and disarmament. Their short courses are renowned for providing diplomats and practitioners with in-depth analyses of the non-proliferation regime, the NPT, and current challenges in arms control and nuclear security.
According to Pelham-Raad, her participation shows Liberia’s commitment to global disarmament efforts and highlights the increasing involvement of African nations in international security dialogues. This, according to her, also serves as a beacon of empowerment, encouraging more women to engage in fields traditionally dominated by men.
