London, UK – Veteran Liberian journalist, advocate, and humanitarian, Ambassador Maxson S. Kpakio, has been honored with the Lifetime Achievement in Humanitarian Cause and Journalism Award at the second edition of the Liberians Excellence Achievers and Global Stars (LEAGS) Awards 2024. The ceremony, held in London over the weekend, celebrated Kpakio’s unwavering dedication to advocacy and social justice both in Liberia and beyond.
Speaking about the recognition, Ambassador Kpakio expressed his excitement and surprise at receiving such a prestigious award. “I was hugely bemused about it because it was not something I expected, especially from a global perspective. To be recognized by such a big organization comprising different countries is a huge plus for me,” he said.
LEAGS Awards, based in the United Kingdom, honors individuals and organizations for their exceptional contributions to leadership, entrepreneurship, governance, and philanthropy. The committee noted Kpakio’s outstanding service to human rights advocacy, social justice, and peace, stating, “Ambassador Kpakio exemplifies excellent leadership and humanitarian services, ensuring the rights of all people are respected regardless of status or race.”
Kpakio’s efforts have consistently drawn attention to critical social issues, including his advocacy for justice in high-profile cases such as the mysterious deaths of Odell Sherman, Giftee Larmah, Princess Cooper and the three missing boys.
“Since 2009, I’ve been committed to advocacy not because I expected anything in return but because injustice against one is injustice against all,” he shared. “This lifetime achievement award reminds me that my selfless contributions are making an impact. It’s a push to keep going.”
Kpakio’s humanitarian efforts extend beyond advocacy. His recent intervention in sponsoring the education of a teenage student, Tiffani Peters, in Nimba County highlights his commitment to empowering the less fortunate.
Reflecting on his work, he remarked, “Whenever I get even £5, at least £1 or £2 goes to a charitable cause. It’s fulfilling to know that people recognize my contributions, even those from different backgrounds and communities.”
Despite challenges, Kpakio remains steadfast in his mission. “Advocacy is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. Since 2009, I’ve been in this space without looking for personal gain or support. This award is a reminder that as long as society exists, the work must continue,” he emphasized.
Kpakio’s recognition has sparked positive reactions, with many pundits commending LEAGS for selecting an individual whose work inspires young activists and humanitarians. The award highlights his contributions to transforming lives without controversy and underscores the importance of sustained advocacy for social change.
Ambassador Kpakio expressed gratitude and hope. “I thank God for giving me direction and the strength to make even small contributions that impact lives. This award motivates me to keep going, knowing that what I started will continue to matter.”
The LEAGS Awards also honored individuals and organizations across various sectors, including governance, business, education, and entertainment, further cementing its role as a platform for celebrating excellence within Liberia and globally.
