Monrovia – President Joseph Boakai on Monday led a delegation of government officials to sign the book of condolences in honor of the late Senator Prince Johnson of Nimba County. The senator, who served in the Liberian Senate for more than 18 years, passed away on November 28, 2024 at the age of 72 at a local hospital in outside the capital.
The ceremony at the Capitol Building brought together a host of dignitaries, including Vice President Jeremiah Koung, Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, and members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Family members, political allies, and officials from Senator Johnson’s Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) were also in attendance to honor his memory. Former President George Weah later arrived to sign the condolence book, joining the multitude of mourners.
Funeral arrangements for Senator Johnson have been finalized and will unfold over several days, encompassing traditional and state ceremonies. On Tuesday, January 14, the senator’s remains will be removed from Samuel Stryker Funeral Home and transported to the Capitol Building, where it will lie in state for public viewing. That evening, the body will be taken to Christ Chapel of Faith in Paynesville for wake-keeping.
The journey to Nimba County will commence on January 15, with the body first arriving in Sokopa for traditional ceremonies led by local leaders. From there, the remains will proceed to Ganta, where another night of wake-keeping will be observed. On January 16, the body will make a brief stop in Sanniquellie, the capital of Nimba County, before heading to Karnplay for another wake-keeping ceremony.
The next day, January 17, the remains will leave Karnplay and make brief stops in Bahn and Saclepea, where additional wake-keeping events will be held. The final funeral rites are scheduled for January 18 in Ganta, where President Boakai, members of the National Legislature, and other high-ranking officials are expected to be present. Senator Johnson will be laid to rest in Ganta following the service. Senator Prince Johnson leaves behind a legacy that is both celebrated and debated. A towering figure in Liberia’s contemporary history, he was a key player during the civil conflict and later served as a statesman, advocating for the interests of his constituents in Nimba County.
