Monrovia – The National Elections Commission (NEC) has set April 22, 2025, as the date for the senatorial by-election in Nimba County, following the passing of Senator Prince Johnson on January 30.
NEC Acting Chairperson, Counselor Teplah Reeves, announced the decision at a press conference in Monrovia on Monday, confirming that the Liberian Senate has formally notified the Commission of the vacancy. She emphasized that NEC is constitutionally mandated to fill the seat within 90 days, in line with Article 37 of the Liberian Constitution.
“In keeping with our legal obligation, NEC has scheduled April 22, 2025, for the Nimba County senatorial by-election after thorough consultations,” Reeves stated.
To facilitate the process, she directed the two electoral magistrates assigned to Nimba County to begin preparations, starting with the publication of by-election regulations and guidelines on February 28, 2025.
Responding on behalf of the electoral magistrates, Asanto Lekpen assured the NEC Board of Commissioners of their commitment to conducting a credible and transparent election.
“We recognize the importance of this election to the people of Nimba County. Our team is fully prepared to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process,” Lekpen said.
NEC has urged all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and the electorate, to remain engaged and committed to a peaceful electoral process leading up to the by-election.
