ANC Condemns Violence at CDC Headquarters, Calls for Independent Investigation

Last Updated on August 23, 2024 by The Liberian Investigator

Monrovia – The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has strongly denounced the violent confrontation that broke out today near the headquarters of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC). In a scathing statement, the ANC warned that such incidents evoke memories of Liberia’s turbulent past and must be addressed swiftly to prevent the nation from slipping back into chaos and lawlessness.

The incident, which led to injuries and widespread disruptions, has heightened political tensions, with calls for transparency and justice growing louder. The ANC emphasized that the violence witnessed today underscores the urgent need for a collective commitment to peace and stability, urging all citizens to reject partisanship in favor of national unity.

“We condemn the violence in the strongest possible terms and call on the government to act responsibly and fairly,” said Lafayette E. Gould, National Chairman of the ANC. The party has called for the immediate establishment of an independent commission to investigate the events and to release its findings as soon as possible.

The ANC’s statement expressed deep concern over the government’s handling of the unrest, stressing the importance of transparency and accountability in addressing such disruptions. According to the party, the citizens of Liberia deserve clarity and justice, and any failure to address these issues would only fuel further distrust and division.

In a show of solidarity, the ANC extended heartfelt sympathies to those who were injured or otherwise affected by the violence. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time,” Gould added.

In its message the ANC noted that Liberia cannot afford to be dragged back into an era of violence and lawlessness. The party urged all Liberians, irrespective of political affiliation, to demand better from their leaders and to prioritize peace, justice, and unity.

The opposition political party call urged political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens to collectively denounce violence and advocate for a peaceful and just Liberia. “Together, we can build a nation we are all proud of—a nation where every Liberian can be assured of equality and justice,” the ANC stated.
