University campuses are meant to be sacred spaces, where students can pursue their education in an environment of safety, respect, and intellectual rigor. It is with deep concern that we address the recent disturbances at the University of Liberia, which undermine these fundamental principles.
Between July 10, and as recent as July 17, the Students Unification Party (SUP) crossed the line with their protests. Blocking roads, disrupting traffic, and demanding the resignation of Associate Professor Sekou Konneh, the Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs, is unacceptable. Such reckless behavior not only stains the university’s reputation but also disrupts the education of countless students.
Professor Konneh has made it clear: there will be no “gangster paradise” on campus. His unwavering commitment to upholding the university’s rules, especially in light of violent incidents, including a brutal attack on a female student, is commendable. Cheating, fighting lecturers, and violent behavior are clear violations that must be met with firm action. The administration’s efforts to restore order and discipline are crucial for a safe and conducive learning environment.
SUP’s demands for Professor Konneh’s resignation, based on baseless allegations of corruption and political bias, are absurd. Students must engage in constructive dialogue, not destructive protests. The integrity of our academic institution is at stake, and the administration must be allowed to perform its duties without such interference.
We unequivocally condemn the attacks on faculty and students. Violence and intimidation have no place in academia. Demanding resignations without evidence undermines our democratic processes and governance.
SUP’s threat to disrupt final exams is a direct assault on the academic futures of their peers. Education is a noble pursuit, and campus politics should reflect this. The administration’s coordination with the Liberia National Police to ensure exams proceed is a necessary step to protect the majority who seek uninterrupted education.
We urge Professor Konneh and the university administration to continue enforcing the rules with determination. Our university’s sanctity must be preserved, and those who disrupt and engage in violence must face consequences. The Dean of Students’ office plays a vital role in this, and we support their efforts to maintain order.
Students, it’s time to act with decency and respect. Education should cultivate informed, responsible individuals. The University of Liberia must remain a beacon of learning and safety. The future of our nation hinges on the integrity and dedication of its educated youth. Let’s not sacrifice this for short-sighted political games.
Defend our campus. Uphold our values. Ensure a brighter future.
