A Good Friday Call to National Reflection and Renewal

Today, as the Christian world solemnly observes Good Friday, we in Liberia are reminded of the profound sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who endured crucifixion for the redemption of humanity. This day, though not officially recognized as a public holiday in Liberia , holds deep spiritual significance for many Liberians, symbolizing themes of sacrifice, forgiveness, and hope.

In Monrovia, a unique tradition persists where children craft effigies of Judas Iscariot, the betrayer of Christ, and symbolically denounce betrayal by beating these effigies. This practice serves as a communal expression of our collective disdain for treachery and a reaffirmation of our commitment to integrity and unity .

As we reflect on the meaning of Good Friday, we are called to examine our national conscience. Liberia, a nation with a rich history and resilient people, continues to face challenges that test our unity and moral fabric. Issues such as corruption, social injustice, and economic disparities persist, hindering our progress and undermining the sacrifices of those who came before us.

Good Friday teaches us that through suffering and sacrifice, redemption is possible. It is a day that encourages introspection and a recommitment to values that uplift and unify. Let us, therefore, use this occasion to:

  • Promote Forgiveness and Reconciliation: Embrace the spirit of forgiveness to heal divisions within our communities and political spheres.
  • Uphold Integrity: Denounce corruption and advocate for transparency and accountability at all levels of government and society.
  • Foster Unity: Celebrate our diversity and work collaboratively towards common goals that benefit all Liberians.
  • Support the Vulnerable: Extend compassion and assistance to those in need, reflecting the selfless love exemplified by Christ.

As we commemorate this sacred day, let it not be solely a religious observance but also a catalyst for national transformation. May the lessons of Good Friday inspire us to build a Liberia that embodies the principles of justice, peace, and unity.

Happy Good Friday, and may God bless Liberia.
