BUSHROD ISLAND — The Governor of the Borough of New Kru Town on Bushrod Island, Mr. Robert B. Teah, is calling on residents to unite and work collectively to drive development in the community.
Governor Teah highlighted that since the establishment of the Borough in 1916, little progress has been made in terms of tangible development, largely due to political differences.
“I have been in office for almost two months now since my appointment by President Joseph N. Boakai, and we are doing everything possible to bring our people together under one umbrella,” he said. “This includes engaging the heads of the eight nominating communities, elders, and youth to move the Borough forward.”
In an exclusive interview with The Liberian Investigator over the weekend, Governor Teah disclosed that the Borough has not been included in the national budget for years. He explained that all revenue generated within the Borough is deposited into the Monrovia City Corporation’s account. In return, the Monrovia City Mayor determines what portion of that revenue is allocated for New Kru Town’s development.
He called for the inclusion of New Kru Town in the national budget, emphasizing that it would fast-track development. “If the Borough is placed in the National Budget, it will greatly enhance our ability to carry out necessary projects,” he said.
Governor Teah promised to prioritize development initiatives for New Kru Town while working with the elders’ council to resolve conflicts in the community’s best interest.
“I assure you, with the work we have started, New Kru Town can expect significant progress. It is time for us to stand together, collectively, to restore what we have lost over the years. I will always stand by you to resolve conflicts and move the Borough forward.”
He urged residents to remain calm, stressing that peace is essential for development and a foundation for progress. He called for unity and collaboration, underscoring that collective efforts are crucial for New Kru Town’s success.
Governor Teah also expressed gratitude to Montserrado County District #16 Representative Dixon Sebo for his support and cooperation since assuming office.
However, his nomination as Governor initially sparked tensions, with residents—particularly the elders’ council—arguing that it violated the Borough Act. The Act, they claimed, grants the council authority to nominate a governor to the President for appointment, a step that was bypassed in Teah’s case. This controversy led to protests, injuries, and a delay in his assumption of office.
Governor Teah acknowledged these past challenges but emphasized that he is working with previous leadership to foster collaboration. “You can’t produce a new mat without using the old one,” he said.
He also revealed that a massive cleanup campaign is underway to give New Kru Town a facelift ahead of the festive season. He appealed to well-meaning sons and daughters of the Borough to support the effort by providing tools and materials for the campaign.
Governor Teah reiterated his commitment to uniting the Borough and advancing development, promising to build a brighter future for New Kru Town.
