MONROVIA – Montserrado County District #7 Representative Emmanuel Dahn has strongly condemned the ongoing demolition exercise carried out by the Ministry of Public Works and the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) in his district, calling it “appalling” and poorly executed.
The demolition, which targets structures built on sewage lines, is part of an effort by the LWSC to clear public utility pathways of illegal encroachments. However, Dahn argues that the exercise is causing severe hardship for residents and local businesses.
According to the lawmaker, many families have been left homeless, while businesses have suffered major disruptions due to what he described as an uncoordinated and abrupt operation. He criticized the seven-day ultimatum given to affected individuals, saying it was insufficient for proper relocation or adjustments.
“This demolition exercise should have been properly coordinated to prevent unnecessary suffering,” Dahn stated. “I am not against development, but it must be implemented in a way that considers the welfare of the people.”
He called on the Ministry of Public Works and LWSC to engage affected residents in meaningful dialogue and explore alternative solutions that would safeguard both public infrastructure and citizens’ livelihoods.
The demolition has sparked mixed reactions, with some residents supporting the government’s efforts to restore order to public spaces, while others decry the loss of homes and businesses.
