MONROVIA — The authorities of the Montserrado County Council say they are finding it difficult to carry out their duties due to a lack of essential tools and resources across the county.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday in Monrovia on behalf of the council, an elder of the institution, Mr. Joe Y. Gono, noted that as a primary body tasked with promoting good governance, transparency, and development at the local level, the council is compelled to draw the government’s attention to several issues that need urgent redress by the Unity Party government.
The Montserrado County Council called for a review and adjustment of the honorarium for its members, arguing that it is untenable for individuals who have committed themselves to public service to endure financial strain while serving their communities. According to their statement, a fair honorarium is not only a matter of equity but is also essential for ensuring that capable individuals remain engaged in serving the people of Montserrado County.
The council also highlighted the lack of essential office equipment, such as printers and other necessary tools, which severely hampers their productivity. These resources, they said, are critical to the efficient functioning of their office and the effective execution of their duties. The Montserrado County Council urged the Unity Party government to take immediate steps to rectify this deficiency, as it significantly undermines their operational efficiency.
Mr. Joe Y. Gono pointed out the council’s urgent request for the immediate appointment of a legal officer and an administrative officer, noting that the absence of these positions compromises the council’s ability to provide necessary legal and administrative support.
He further emphasized that public education and awareness are integral to effective governance. The council called for the immediate allocation of funds to support educational campaigns across Montserrado County districts. These initiatives, according to him, are vital to informing citizens of their rights and responsibilities, fostering greater civic engagement, and ensuring that ignorance does not impede progress. Empowering citizens through education is a critical component of their duties.
In their six-point petition statement, read by Elder Joe Y. Gono, the Montserrado County Council called for measures to enhance the professionalism and credibility of the council. This includes the creation of official branding, such as letterheads, logos, stamps, and dedicated email addresses, which they believe are essential for strengthening the council’s institutional identity and improving communication with governmental bodies and the communities they serve.
The Montserrado County Council consists of nine members, including chiefs, women’s organizations, youths, people living with disabilities, and civil society organizations.
The council expressed its profound gratitude to His Excellency President Joseph N. Boakai for his leadership in enforcing the implementation of the Local Government Act of 2018, which has provided a strong foundation for inclusive and participatory governance in Montserrado County and across Liberia.
The Montserrado County Council called on relevant authorities, development partners, and the citizens of Liberia to recognize the urgency of the challenges the council is currently facing.
