Grand Kru County – Local authorities in Grand Kru County have suspended mining activities, particularly those involving machinery, in response to outcry from residents of the affected communities. The communities impacted include Wehken and Philadelphia in electoral district #2, which is represented by House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.

In an exclusive interview with The Liberian Investigator via mobile phone on Tuesday, Grand Kru County Development Officer Mr. Joe N. Sekpeh noted that many Chinese nationals and other foreigners are entering the county without the authorities’ knowledge.
Sekpeh stated that most of the machines have been in the county for nearly a year, with some arriving during the transition period. “We took this decision to combat illicit mining activities and protect the environment from potential disasters across Grand Kru County, as the locals are crying for farmland in those affected communities,” Sekpeh was quoted as saying.
The Grand Kru County Development Officer revealed that the decision was reached on Monday, July 23, 2024, following a consultative meeting with residents of Forpoh and Buah Statutory Districts and assessments conducted by county authorities. The mining activities are encroaching on the road in Philadelphia, Dweken, and other surrounding communities, with excavators and other heavy equipment being used.
Sekpeh alleged that there is no reclamation of the pits, which are scattered throughout the forest. Both ordinary Liberians and Chinese nationals are engaging in random mining activities, particularly those using heavy machinery, without implementing any reclamation plans—a violation of the laws and the responsibility of the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
He disclosed that several pieces of mining equipment have been confiscated, and the county’s joint security has been mandated to implement the shutdown plans without fear or favor. Discussions on reclamation will commence in close consultation with the Ministry of Mines and Energy in response to the citizens’ concerns.
Sekpeh emphasized that the County Administration’s focus is not on implementing mining policies but on addressing the damage caused by the miners and the future danger it poses to citizens.
According to the citizens, the stance from the County Administration has alleviated their concerns and demonstrated a commitment to their wellbeing following the engagements.
Joe N. Sekpeh dismissed rumors that some of the mining equipment is owned by lawmakers from Grand Kru County. “This information is false and misleading. Those who are spreading such information want to gain sympathy from the public and need to provide proof of their claims.”
He defended the Grand Kru County Legislative Caucus, asserting that they have good character and are always seeking the interest of the citizens. “They can’t be involved in activities that will endanger the lives of their people.”
