Liberia’s Debt Crisis: Urgent Call for Prudent Debt Management by Finance Minister-designate Augustine Ngafuan

MONROVIA – Liberia’s Finance and Development Planning Minister, Augustine Ngafuan, has emphasized the government’s commitment to unlocking Liberia’s economy through significant investments in roads and energy infrastructure.

Speaking on the sidelines of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) annual meetings in Washington, D.C., Ngafuan outlined the government’s strategy in a meeting with World Bank Vice President for Western and Central Africa, Ousmane Diagana, and his regional directors.

According to Ngafuan, roads and energy are vital drivers of Liberia’s economic growth, impacting all sectors. “The government is committed to achieving this transformative development,” he stated, adding that Liberia’s National Development Plan, the ARREST Agenda, aligns with these priorities.

Ngafuan expressed gratitude to the World Bank for its support and said that the government is urgently addressing constraints in infrastructure to enable private sector growth. He noted that securing counterpart funding from the World Bank and other development partners is essential to achieving Liberia’s infrastructure goals.

“When infrastructure needs are met, Liberians will have better access to development opportunities, fostering private sector job growth,” Ngafuan said. For 2025, the government is focused on implementing robust strategic plans in roads, energy, and health to support national growth and development.

World Bank Vice President Ousmane Diagana commended Ngafuan’s dedication to strengthening Liberia’s economy, as well as President Boakai’s early initiatives to combat corruption and ensure the proper use of public funds. “We commend the government for taking early steps to control corruption and misuse of public funds,” Diagana said, affirming the World Bank’s support in addressing Liberia’s infrastructure challenges.

The meeting was attended by Liberia’s Finance Minister Ngafuan, Agriculture Minister Dr. Alexander Nuetah, Deputy Minister for Economic Management Dephue Zuo, and other members of the delegation
